In-Depth :: Toys

The toy industry today has seen a significant decrease in sales since the 1990’s. In 2005, the total amount of sales was $2.1 billion dollars, compared to the $18.7 billion in 1994.

Also, the toy industry itself is changing. Nintendo Wii, XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 have opened up a new genre of toys. Today, young boys ask for Guitar Hero or Halo 3 instead of Legos, and young girls want a Hannah Montana video game instead of Barbies and stuffed animals.

However, for those of us who grew up in the 1990’s, we remember the classic toys that we played with— Sock’em Boppers, Skip-its, Polly Pockets. Now, Tamagotchis, Beanie Babies, Barbies and Legos are being replaced with Game Boys, Wii’s and Bratz.
