Bartnik Unimpressed by Hosseini

  
A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini’s second novel, at first glance has the aspects of a good story: riveting main characters, easy to hate villains but realistically human, vivid language and a realistic setting.  However, upon the second and third glance ATSS (A Thousand Splendid Suns) failed to live up to the expectations I had after reading Hosseni’s first book, The Kite Runner.  ATSS tells the story of two women living in Afghanistan. The book begins about thirty years ago and continues to tell the history of Afghanistan up to present time.  Hosseini’s books receive a lot of acclaim for spreading awareness of what life is like in Afghanistan, and kudos to him, but it does not automatically make ATSS a good book. read more

Summer Movies Do Well at Last Season's Box Office

  
This past summer the box office was buzzing with people waiting to see the latest movies.  According to IMDB.com, the top ten movies of this summer were; Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, Transformers, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ratatouille, Shrek the Third, Live Free or Die Hard, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ocean’s 13, and Nancy Drew.  Those were chosen through a poll of 800 moviegoers. read more
