74 New NHS Members Inducted in All School Assembly

An important and much anticipated event for many occurred on April 24, 2007. It was the seventy-first Annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony.

“NHS is an organization for students who have a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA. They have to be juniors or seniors and it’s an honor organization in which they have to be well rounded to get in to,” explained the head of NHS, Jack Daniels.

This year senior Emily Azzalino is NHS president, senior Jean Brody is vice-president, senior Mollie Overby is secretary and the treasurer is senior Alicia West.

At the assembly science teacher Kenneth Dunbar, a science teacher at PHS, was chosen to be the guest speaker. Dunbar spoke of his days as a lumberjack and the importance of being involved and doing well academically. Seventy-four new members were inducted along with 52 seniors, making a total of 126 members.

Not everyone knows exactly what NHS members do or what the benefits of joining are. “As NHS members, students do service projects such as bell ringing, giving blood, and tutoring, among other things. They also put on the food drive each year and work to make it a success,” informed Daniels. The NHS hosted the Sadie Hawkins dance on June 1.

“I would have to say the benefits of being a member are that it’s really good for college and it makes you feel good about yourself,” said Azzalino. Daniels added that NHS makes a student an active member in the school and gets students involved in “giving back to the school.”

Besides the previous requirements stated, students also have to make a portfolio describing, “How they met the NHS ideals of leadership, scholarship, character and service,” explained Daniels.
